 Ocean Processes

  1.  Processes in the ocean system are selected from:
  • Ocean Composition - gradients, temperature, density, salinity, pressure
  • Ocean Circulation - surface and thermohaline, Coriolis Effect, Ekmans Transport. It includes Eddies, Gyres and BoundaryCurrents
  • Carbon Cycle - carbonate chemistry, physical pumps, and biological pumps.
  • transport of matter and energy - heat tides and waves.
The standard also covers the Southern Oscillation -El Niño and La Niña and Ocean Acidification

    2. 2021 Assessment Specifications
  • The effects of climate change on ocean processes will be examined
  • The solubility pump is an example of a physical pump in the carbon cycle
  • The ocean composition includes mixed layer, deep layer, pycnocline, thermocline, and halocline.
  • Transport of matter in the ocean could include any materials, including nutrients

ACTIVITY FOR STUDENTS
  1. Read and make your own notes from the articles provided.
  2. Explore the two websites given. Take notes on new concepts provided in these websites
  3. Use one of the images of NZ Coastal currents and practice making a simple drawing.
  4. Create a question sheet for one of the articles for next years class.
  5. Write an answer to the Past exam question (sorry the map given is not available).
